National Bureau of Statistics Commences 2017 HDI Computation Exercise

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has commenced the process of developing the 2017 Human Development Index (HDI). The Human Development Index (HDI), as developed by the United Nations is a measure employed to assess the levels of social and economic development in countries. The HDI emphasizes the fact that people and their capabilities should be the ultimate criteria for assessing the development of a country, and not economic growth alone. It measures the average achievements in three key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and a decent standard of living. The health dimension is assessed by life expectancy at birth, the knowledge dimension is measured by mean of years of schooling for adults aged 25 years and more, and expected years of schooling for children of school entering age, while the standard of living dimension is measured by gross national income per capita.

The process of computing the index as expected, will involve the use of a wide range of data from existing and non-existing datasets. The existing data gaps will be filled with information to be collected administratively from public institutions and through a nationwide household survey. Over the next month (5th – 30th September 2017), NBS field officers will be visiting public institutions and households across the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory to collect relevant information. We therefore solicit the full cooperation of the selected households and institutions in providing us with the requested information. The prompt supply of this information will ensure that NBS completes this exercise in time, to enable us to provide the public, government and policy makers with useful and timely statistics for which can be used to monitor progress and make evidence based policy decisions. While thanking the public for your usual support and cooperation in supplying us with information, we expect to publish the results of the exercise before the end of year.
